View Full Version : Captain Kwok's Space Empires Depot!

Captain Kwok
July 13th, 2003, 02:59 AM
Greetings!

I put together a little website this afternoon to act as my Online homebase for any projects I'll be doing in the future. It'll be dedicated to the Space Empires franchise and be updated on a regular basis. It's a little blank at the moment, but I promise more content before the next redesign. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Anyways, let me know what you think and feel free to suggest items that I could add to the site in the future.

You do realize that you are being given credit for your work on the Star Trek Mod? Without you the mod that is now in testing could not have been done.

Granted it is not what you had invisioned, but it is a great start to getting there.

Perhaps you could host the full Version once it is ready? Hopefully by August 1st the mod will be available for all to use and enjoy. You have invested so much time into the project to let it go to waste.

And Nice site, may I add it to my soon to becoming links page?

Kwok, your web site is clean, simple, uncluttered, well balanced and looks great. It's refreshing to see people put the 'K.I.S.S.' philosophy to good use.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I would host the mod, but I have a low transfer limit since it's webspace from my ISP. Perhaps in the future, I'll secure my own domain...

Why is KISS overated? Especially for web pages; it can speed download and loading time.

I hit Kwok's website, it loads frigging near instantly. I hit Fyron's web site and have to watch as it loads..then notice the actual content is squished into a much smaller square by the border, which has no links or anything funtional in it.

Fyron
July 13th, 2003, 08:26 PM
The border is an insignificant portion of the screen unless you are loading the site in a small window or very low resolution (such as 640x480). KISS is actually not taking over for web sites, as they are already generally designed really simplistically (and have been for ever). There is nothing to take over. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Also, with the broadband resolution, more and more people are getting on fast internet connections and the extra load time is not that significant for them.

Also, the border only loads once when you first go to the site. If you stick around and spend more than ten seconds looking at it, that extra load time in the beginning is quite insignificant. Do you complain about the extra time you have to wait when starting up a computer game? I would certainly hope not. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Phoenix-D
July 13th, 2003, 10:12 PM
No, because the extra wait gennerally does something. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif I'm on cable Fyron. And we have different definitions of insignificant, apparently.

I am on what is probably the slowest possible cable modem out there. I just loaded up the Kazharii Imperium web site, and it took a total of 18.95 seconds to load. To me, that is not anything to be worried about. And no, nothing of it was in my browser Cache.

Don't get me wrong, I usually prefer to use some sort of framing - but I always seem to use the same sort of look and I wanted this site to look different from the former STmod site and any future project website. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

The mod is actually based on a series I made back when I was younger, so I've had no shortage of ideas and plans for the details. I'm currently working on a website for the mod, but here is a little more information:

There are ten major empires:
Banana Star Republic
Broccoli Collective
Carrot Imperium
Corn Confederacy
Fruit Federation
Meat Empire
Potato Alliance
Pumpkin Patch
Tomato Union
Vegetable Dominion

Each race is created to play differently. Once I make available the race descriptions it will become more obvious.

Time to resurrect a long dead thread!

If you haven't checked out my little website recently you might have missed the re-launch of Captain Kwok's planet factory. All my new planets are being developed in the "Kwok noveau style". Follow the link in my signature to see the early results!

For comparison, planets made in the "Kwok old-skool style" can still be viewed at the old Star Trek mod site in the graphics > planet images section here: Old Star Trek Mod Site (http://members.rogers.com/stmod/).

Some of you may have pondered the fate of the Space Food Empires mod. It is not dead! Work has been slow but continuous and results are coming shortly. As the school year winds down for me, more free time lies ahead! More free time should translate to more mod-related production.

You can find a partially functional/updated test website here: Space Food Empires Partially Completed Site (http://members.rogers.com/spacefoodempires/main.html).

The website site does have a mostly updated common components list that may be of interest.

Hmm, the new planets are nice looking, but they just look oddly misshapen... like the clouds are too thick above the surface or something and making them asymmetrical... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

Captain Kwok
March 31st, 2004, 04:47 AM
It's really from the fact that the clouds are actually above the surface of the planet, and because of the SE:IV portrait size, the atmospheric haze (which is nicely present in larger renders) is lost. The effect for some planets with clouds at either N-S or E-W poles is the appearance of a slight elongation - I can fix it with a little editing to show more atmosphere...

Next up are 80 more O2 planets split evenly between ice and gas giant. I plan on making 500-600 new planets (approximately 100-120 for each SE:IV planet type) over the next few months.

Greetings!

Just in case you don't visit my website on a regular basis, which you should be doing by the way, I've made a major overhaul to the site - at least on the coding level of things - cleaning up all the sloppy html code and adding style sheets.

I've added a new area in the Race Styles section called the "Ship Graveyard". It features a number of images that I came across while cleaning up my webspace, images I thought were lost in my hard drive crash Last year.

Drop by the site and read the latest news item to see the "Ship Graveyard" along with some descriptions I've added for them. I'll be adding some of the Trek ship images I have and other scrap ship models that I can find lying around.

Check it out! Help make the Space Empires Depot the number 5 site in all of Space Empires! /threads/images/Graemlins/Cold.gif

I did some work on the Space Empires site today and laid the groundwork for a couple new sections. One of them is called Reviews, where I'll look over different mods or fan sites. Also, I'm going to create an award to be bestowed upon a different individual each month for distinguished service to the Space Empires Community.

If you haven't visited in a while, perhaps now would be a good time to drop by. The next few days should be eventful as I take advantage of the new facilities I have available. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
