But can this be done in the standard game by say, killing it's weapons and engines... then boarding.

Maybe there should be a pirate boarding party item in the universe... MODDERS!!!

Is it possible to disable and board an enemy ship in combat and claim it for yourself? (not the abandoned hulks)

Just had the same problem with my computer at work. Fixed it by going into DXDIAG and ENABLING Direct3D and DirectDraw in the display tab. Give it a shot.
