Also, I was put off by the shopping cart too, but when the game arrived, the invoice was all very official, I checked the address and phone number they gave me and they check out.

Never played multiplayer but can you or the host still check/uncheck empires in the "Players" menu and arrange a surrender? That would certainly speed up early research if it were possible.
