Re: Crossbows vs. Longbows

The problem with bows in this context is that you can't leave them strung all the time - you will ruin the bow. It's not a question of keeping the bow close at hand, it's a question of stringing it...

Re: MA Ulm Pretender

a) I just wanted to see if ulm had a unit to counter elephants. The forum wisdom is that ulm has nothing that can beat an elephant. Nothing. But gold-cost equivalents did fine in my limited...

Re: MA Ulm Pretender

For my own amusement, I made a 10 space random map and played a little test between arcos and ulm. I built 7 ulm black knights and set them on the front lines with attack nearest. I built 4...

Re: Any Plans

I don't think the price here is as much an issue as the total lack of flash. Forgive me, because I really do love the game, but I do not think it is marketed well. I think one web site with the...

terrain altering spells?

The biggest lack that I see in the game, and maybe this is a dom 4 thing, is the lack of terrain altering spells. Grow a forest, turn a wasteland to farmland, maybe flood a coastal province and make...

Re: Is MA ulm really for experts?

We agree. However, I think utilizing magic items fully only comes with experience. There is no real easy path that I can see (or maybe we are just an FAQ away, I don't know). With all other...

Is MA ulm really for experts?

Disclaimer: I play a lot of online games, and in most of them I see a pattern in which a very few but vocal players defend a weak power/class/whatever by saying "well, obviously you are not an expert...

Re: Good late game SCs?

I need to try too. A magic carpet didn't work. :-(

Re: Q: how to get holy 4 or 5?

I read that in another thread which I can't find now. :-)

I've put shields on H1 and H2 priests and they don't work, just like you.

Re: Q: how to get holy 4 or 5?

Crystal Shield is something like e2/s3, and you need a point in some magic in order to get the bonus in holy level. You can't just put a crystal shield on your typical priest to get h2.

Re: Is there an incongruous distribution of magic?

To the OP:

Yes, we agree. Why is that important? To me, an uneven distribution of type adds character.

What races does the AI play best?

Actually, a double-question - which ones does the AI play best, and which ones worst? Note "best" doesn't mean "just as good as a real person". :-)

I've seen the AI do well with MA Vanheim...

Re: Good late game SCs?

I don't understand this at all. I summoned a treelord just now in an SP game just to see what they were like. They only have 2 misc slots, and their branches are 15 point attacks - hardly anything...

Re: What is abusive ?

I have to admit, this subject has made me very hesitant to wade into the multi-player arena here.

I'm one of those who feels that as long as it's in the game, and not proscribed ahead of time,...

Re: Do Event-Obtained Troops Cost Upkeep?

I tend to toss a commander onto them, couple them with a few decent troops, and use them to take indies on a secondary front. Later in the game, I use them to make a nuisance for someone else.

If...

Re: CPU utilization?

I have an early MBP w/X1600 graphics card, 2G ram.

I suspect I know what the issue is - the main screen has a constantly scrolling background. The tools screen lies on top of it, but does not...

Re: CPU utilization?

I was on the screen where you pick your dominion/magic/physcial body/etc. Even doing nothing, just being on that screen, seemed to create a big load.

Re: MA ULM: expanding your dominion

Agreed, unless I'm putting special effort.

My problem is that I continually find myself 3-4-5 provinces away from my dominion. But I think I already have my answer: just because ulm has crappy...

CPU utilization?

I'm playing on a Mac. I was using the tools to design a pretender, and I noticed my fan speed up off the charts. I checked the activity monitor, and I find dom3 is chewing up CPU like crazy. What...

Re: MA ULM: expanding your dominion

Friendly dominion gives a morale bonus, fwiw. Also, I find it amusing to give some of my troops boots of stone(?) and the tunic that turns them into sacreds. They end up with 20 prot in the body...

Re: MA ULM: expanding your dominion

I'm going with the army of crappy priests also. The stone idea is something I forgot, and spies with a stone idol? That's great, thanks!

Re: Scorched earth

The devs could take a hint from civ and add client states to the game. If you are at war with someone and losing bad (say 1/2 income and 1/2 gem income and 1/2 army size, as a rough factor), then...

MA ULM: expanding your dominion

I generally play ulm. I find myself expanding my provinces much faster than my dominion. I tend to keep my prophet on the front lines, build plenty of fortresses+temples+labs, occasional lonely...

Re: Can Ulm get war wagons? Please? :-)

I have no idea how to do these things, but I would build an approximation using the tools at hand.

Mobile "forts" are battlefield-only, not something for recruiting purposes. I would simulate...

Can Ulm get war wagons? Please? :-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagenburg

For those who don't know, take a look. War Wagons were used by the hussites in history as mobile strongpoints that dealt with knights. I just think they...
