Default Questions on how I should upgrade my infantry

Soviet long campaign. I have 2 companies of infantry.

As the campaign goes on, I will have various infantry weapons available, and I figure I'll do one upgrade in the campaign for each squad.

Now, I know I'll want both some SVT equipped grunts and some SMG troops.

Do I:

1: Do it by company (automatic rifle company and a assault/SMG company)

2: Do it by platoon (maybe one SVT platoon, one bolt action platoon and one SMG platoon per company)

3: Do it by squad (maybe two SVT, one bolt action, one SMG squad per platoon)

Suggestions ? 3 seems more realistic in the big picture (once we ignore that the soviets never realized their plan of outfitting everyone with SVT's) but may be less useful on the battlefield.

Whichever way you go, decide on a pattern to apply to all infantry platoon formations, as otherwise it gets difficult to remember which is which.

e.g. in my current UK LC, the 0 is a platoon HQ (PIAT, upgraded from Boyes), the next 2 are both original rifle sections from 39 (with the 3 HEAT and 10 or so HE rifle grenades, I prefer to leave them that way rather than use the later ones with 5 HEAT as you lose HE and the HEAT is only there to biff Nazi half tracks, the HE use on grunts is prime), and the 4th section in each platoon was upgraded to have AT grenades. Co HQ is a PIAT section and has a marksman under control. All 3 rifle coys were upgraded to that exact same organisation and so I know that if it is "0" its the PIAT section, "3" it is the AT grenadiers, otherwise its a rifle grenadier. It beats randomly upgrading different teams in different platoons over 3 coys!. (And each rifle coy has the same attachments - 1 close support 4 tank platoon and 1 light tank section of 2).

I don't have much time for SMG units as they suffer at range from riflemen. I may buy support SMG coys in e.g. Stalingrad situations, or if I have a coy that is always used as tank riders perhaps, but then I make sure at least 1 section per platoon is changed to riflemen.

But choosing some sort of "standard pattern" for your line rifle coys (and any independent platoons such as a grunt platoon attached to a tank coy) makes things much easier to keep track of.

If you have a "specialist" coy (like engineers or desant or mech) then it can differ from the line ones, but it will be obvious to you when you deploy it anyhow.

Cheers
Andy

Mobhack is right if make mixed platoons standardise them.
O unit is good as a support unit so takes less fire & has more chance to rally platoon.
Then decide mix of infantry to tank killer.
Can be a good idea to keep third platoon as a dedicated unit like tank killers.
If used SMGs would do entire platoon for use in woods & urban enviroment, not that usefull in a mixed platoon, suppose he would be point man.
