During the Korean war it was not uncommon for USMC HTL Sioux pilots flying recon/artillery spotting mission to carry hand grenades and toss them out the door as "bombs".
Much like the beginning of WW I when aircraft were unarmed they tried any number of interesting things with early helicopters before settling on standardized roles and armament.
