Default Replays

I know you can replay the previous turn, but can you replay the entire battle? It would be way cool if you could! In any case, why can't you see enemy artillery barages on the replay? It would be nice, because when you save a game and come back to it some other day, it's pratically impossible to remember where enemy barages are located if there are no craters or some form of damage to see.

If you are playing PBEM your opponent must turn fast arty off.

If the entire battles events were logged, you would have a PBEM file in the gigabytes size. And watching the replay would take several hours, potentially.

The replay facility is not brilliant, but beats SP1 hands down. SP1 had no replay whatsoever, you were just presented with wrecked units an were left wondering what happened?. SP1 players used to send a text file to thier opponent saying what they did in PBEMs...

SP2 did have replay, but SSI were not interested in doing any work on the old title. Which is how the original SP2WW2 "hack" project got started by Don and myself, i.e. to be able to play WW2 on the new engine with its replay (and more units). Which eventually led to our current game.

The replay does not handle artillery well - unless you use the slow arty with individual shells flying. Which gets tedious in large battles, so I can live without it. It also does not handle any turn zero pre-game bombardment replay well either.

I have stopped using fast arty.

It is possible to crank up the speed of the "animations" which, IMHO, makes the artillery phase bearable even in large games. If you do - your tanks zip around the map when moving, but if you can live with that it's an option I guess....

Fast arty off is completely bearable even with large arty barrages. The key is to set "Graphics Delay" value in game options to some viable number. Combination of that and message delay setting in preferences allows you to change the pace of game/replay substantially.
