I've found that None atmospheres for the moons aren't worth it. I believe someone had found that due to a minor bug, there are slightly more Methane worlds than others in unmodded games. Personally, I just go for Oxygen. I haven't noticed a significant differance in the type of atmosphere I pick.

What does matter more is what atmospheres OTHER players pick. If I end up the only Oxygen breather in the game, that's a big advantange.

There are the same number of methane worlds as hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The bug is that there is one more methane rock world than methane ice world (or was it the other way around?). There are the same number of methane worlds, they are just not balanced between rock and ice as all other atmospheres are. This is so inconsequential that it really doesn't provide any meaningful benefit though...

Other than none, the atmospheres are balanced. None has fewer facility slots overall, due to the lack of gas giants and tendency towards tiny planets (moons).

Arise, ye olde dead horsie.

This has been debated at length several times. I'd say there are several schools of thought. There are the rock-none-ers and ice-none-ers who are into the moons; less big-none planets, but more moons are "breathable".

There are the rock-oxygen-ers who just like to have the same role playing planet type as humans.

There are the gas-anything-ers (no gas-none available) who are into having fewer large colonies over many smaller ones.

There are the scheming anything-anything-ers who always try to have a unique colony tech and breathing empire for maximum multiplayer trading leverage.

Take your pick or make up your own. Someone, possibly SJ, made a map analyzer to check for statistical balance in colony and atmosphere types. I'm sure a forum search will find it. I've also heard that the default game as a slight advantage and a slight disadvantage colony/atmosphere combo, but I can't remember which ones are better/worse right now. The numbers are close enough, however, to make your choice pretty much equal no matter what you pick.

There is more O2 breather, so try to avoid it.

Oh, and if you use Fyron's Quadrant mod, forget the "none" atm for two reason :
_you can start on irradiated planet - and for you irradiated are even more valueless
_moon can have any atmosphére so the advantage is not so big

Despite the fact that everyone chooses Rock/Oxy, everyone takes it anyway. The leveraging for a special position is just not real important to people, I guess. Here's a recent poll of mine - {clicky}

And it was Andres Lescano made a post years ago, which I tried to summarize here at the Encyclopedia Malfadorica

Anyone know where I could find that graphical wheel representing colony/atmosphere percentages? The link above contains a broken link, which I am almost positive used to be to that pic made by Andres Lescano.
