Default ...an illegal operation and will be shut down.

I did some searches for this but didn't come up with anything so, I have to ask does anyone else get this.

I have the dl version and this is the first time I have ever tried to run it.

When I try to run the game from the gameoptions.exe or the spww2.exe I get the unfortunate "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" message. And I'm done.

I did restart after initial install. I then reinstalled the non-upgraded version and left it unpatched with all default settings, except the inital country pairings, I chose Germany and Soviet Union with default June 1944. Its the same for full screen or windowed. I turned off everything in the background. And I restarted after every failure, just to clear ram.

My red baron install will give me this message if too deeply embedded so I tried copying the WinSPWW2 folder directly to my c: drive with no positive result.

I'm running win98 with 512 ram, 1 gig athlon, and a 64meg Voodoo 5 and a simple sound blaster card.

Gee, I hope someone knows what this is. I'd really like to try this game out.

Any ideas welcome.

Joe

Some points to check:

1) Do you have DirectX 8.1 or better installed on your PC?

2) Is your "voodo" graphics card a 3D accelerator type card?.

Our playtesters have managed to play the game on the minimum specs as outlined on the shrapnel site:
* Pentium II 500 MHz
* 128 MB RAM
* Windows 95+
* Minimum 200 MB HDD Space
* 8X CD ROM
* DirectX 8.1
* 3D Accelerator with 32 MB RAM
* Windows Compatible Sound Card
* Mouse

I'd also consider doing a defrag of your hard drive, with a surface test for bad sectors as well, if you have not done that for a while. (It takes a lot of time with the bad sector test, so that would be an overnight job). Any bad sectors, or unlinked clusters on your drive can cause some weird errors.

Cheers
Andy

Defrag is what I had to do on my old system before it would play so it might work.

JoeB,
For a moment I thought the government was closing down your business due to improper licensing!

Got it!

Video card issue. I changed out the Voodoo with a Geforce II.

Now I have to go off and learn to play this game while drinking beer! Life is hard.
