Will commanders ever desert?

What happens if your income becomes much less than your upkeep? I know soldiers start deserting, but does it happen fast? And will commanders ever desert? It seems unfair if they don't, but on the other hand losing random commanders could be really nasty.

I dont remember commanders deserting. Maybe they control the pay and since they always get paid unless its zero money, they are the last to desert

In a game where Niefelheim casted Utterdark... none of my commanders desserted
