Long campaign newbie question

Only recently discovered SPww2 after years playing the original games and, dare I say, this version is a huge improvement, but I have one problem that I can't figure out: How do I play a long campaign without every battle being a meeting engagement? What am I doing wrong?

The first 3 battles in any campaign (except for a user campaign) will be meeting engagements.

Haha, and I being an idiot was restarting my campaign!
