Default Zhalanashkol Incident

To finish the Soviet/Chinese conflict, here's the last incident that happened during these border clashes.

Quote:
Zhalanashkol Incident
Date: August 13, 1969
Battle Location: Near Lake Zhalanashkol, Kazakh SSR
Battle Type: Soviet assault vs PRC defend

Description: The battle takes place near the Soviet-Chinese border, few kilometers deep in the Soviet territory. On morning 13th several PRC infantry squads cross the border, achieve the Kamenaya and Pravaya peaks and start to fortify their positions.

Short argument between the Soviet troops and PRC units doesn't solves anything and border guards leave the scene to wait for reinforcements. After arrival of Soviet BTRs and hard fight, overhelmed PRC troops retreat. One of the key factors that decided the out come of the battle was absence of AT weaponry on
PRC side, since they didn't anticipated presence of Soviet IFVs in the region.

Notes: If played against the AI the human player should take the Soviet side.

Sources: A. Musalov, Damansky and Zhalanashkol, Moscow 2005.
This is small and short scenario, as the actual incident involved only few units. Should be suitable for reasonable PBEM aswell.

Any comments, improvement ideas and so on are more than welcome.

EDIT: Final version is attached.

Changes:
- Scenario is bit longer now (30 turns)
- China tries to reinforce their positions (as it was historically)
- Mi-4 instead of Mi-2 for Soviets
- Fixed VPs
- Some other minor stuff

I found this scenario of excellent scope requiring thoughtful battle planning. The terrain and balance of forces are consequential and required patience. Therefore, I used my vehicles in over watch positions to pound the Chinese mercilessly with suppression fires from multiple vehicles. Moreover, I left the roads immediately after plotting an approach to the Chinese positions that was clear of rough terrain and at an approach that limited the Chinese fire zones.

A few suggestions are in order:
  1. The Force HQ formation leaders on both sides are too high and should be no more than 2nd Lieutenants with a formation appropriate to that rank, say a Guards Platoon or something similar, rather than a battalion.
  2. There were no flag values, I would have liked to have Victory Flag values.
  3. Although, it is not required in our game, I prefer HQ units in my formations of say 3 men for a platoon and more for higher units.

Overall, the scenario an entertaining experience.
