Default How to edit to give yourself an instant promotion?

My question is related to this thread: https://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=52916

I would like to edit a saved gamed (it's a 12-game campaign) and promote my HQ leader to the rank of Brigadier General (or equivalent). I know that I could edit the Rnkxx.dat to replace the word 'Major' with 'Brigadier General', but this is not my intention. I want the HQ unit to have the highest possible rank. How do I achieve that?

Generated campaign or user made?

If you can open the save in the editor you can edit units.

Simplest way I can think of is

--> click on the HQ unit.
--> hit D on your keyboard
--> click UNIT LEADER
--> click Rank
--> enter 10 (should be General rank)

Think you'll have to fiddle with the save file and make it scenario, do your edits and then change things back to the save file. Maybe jump into the editor and try it out on some random HQ to see if this is what you want first.

Thank you for the help. Can you advise me step-by-step how to open a saved game and in which editor?

Alternative A)

1. Save your campaign.
2. Go to the game folder named SAVED GAMES and find the save files.
3. Send me the files (wulfir at hotmail) and I'll edit the rank for you and send it back to you.
4. Install the edited files into the SAVED GAMES FOLDER.
5. Let's Rock!

Alternative B)

1. Save the campaign into save slot 056 on Turn 1 of the game.
2. Go to the game folder named SAVED GAMES.
3. Find SpSv056.dat and SpSv056.cmt.
4. Change the names to SpMBTScn0546.dat and SpMBTScn0546.cmt.
5. Move the files into the folder named SCENARIOS.
6. When in the game click yourself into the EDITOR.
7. Find and click the button for LOAD scenario and go to 0546.
8. When the scenario is loaded click deploy for your side and find the HQ - edit the rank.
9. Save the now edited "scenario".
10. Go back to the SCENARIO folder and find the scenario.
11. Give the files new numbers. Now name them SpSv080.dat and SpSv080.cmt - - > will end up in a new slot.
12. Place the now edited files in the SAVED GAMES folder.
13. Game time!

I think the rank change will be mostly cosmetic - it won't impact the game much. I'm a little curious as to why you'd want this particular edit - what is the setup for the campaign?

The rank is only a title, ie a different string. It does not a thing as of itself.

In long campaigns, the unit may have its rank title upped as it progresses (or downgraded if wiped out) - but that is purely a cosmetic beside te real effects of increased/decreased EXP, MOR and the various leadership values etc as it progresses and gains or gets wiped and regresses.

Thank you for your help, wulfir. Why do I want this cosmetic change? Well, have you ever had a general in your army? I have

Back in the day my company got inspected on our ability to function in a NBC environment by the then Chefen Armén Åke Segrén who held general rank. Never met another general.

Typically though during the Cold War and a bit after Swedish brigades and commanders of brigade size formations - like a so called Försvarsområde ("Territorial Defence Area") were commanded by officers with an odd rank called Colonel 1 or Colonel 1st Degree that typically in foreign armies would be Brigadier-Generals.

Those colonels were sometimes nicknamed Colonel Worst Degree. The degree thing had it's origin in being on a higher pay scale than a regular colonel.

Not long after I got out of Boot Camp and MOS school I was stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in California as a logistic clerk. Due to the rather small size of the Depot everyone ran on the same course (from recruits to the commanding general) for exercise.

I'd bumped into an older guy running by himself fairly often and we'd chatted a bit while running together. I assumed he was some crusty old senior NCO. One day I saw a picture of the Depot Commanding General.

I did meet the Divisional commander who would go on to become the Chief of Staff (So, I've met him as a two star general and he ended up as a 4-star general). Sadly, the guy passed away a couple of days ago.
