Default legions of Steel ect

When you have spells that 'buff' one unit like 'Legion of Steel' it says that one unit will have its Armour protection raised.

OK....my question is not only on this spell but on others, say regeneration (where 1 unit gets the buff)how do you know which unit will get the spell/buff?

I mean if I have mercs in the front line and a unit of MY infantry next to it along with archers behind it and 1 mage in back, then I would more than likely want my foremost infantry unit to have the Legions buff and not the MAGE.

Is there any way to tell or direct who gets the spell?

Two last questions, if I cast Sermon of Courage ONCE, does that last the whole battle or just that round?

If I cast Legion of Steel twice do I get 2 units with armour raised for the whole battle/one round? Or does it wear off after round one and I have to do it agian and take my chances on which unit it will pick?

Heeeellllppp!!!!

Nope. The mage will cast where he thinks it's best, which is usually on low-Prot units close to the mage. For good coverage, it's best to have multiple mages casting Legions of Steel, spread out through your army. It may also be necessary to station your mages/weak troops closer to the heavy inf than you'd prefer (use an archer decoy). If a mage casts it on the wrong target, vindictively order him to assault an enemy strongpoint alone as punishment. For what it's worth, Strength of Giants is usually targetted a little more intelligently than Legions of Steel, perhaps because it has slightly more range.

Sermon of Courage raises Morale by +2 for the whole battle, for those units.

Legions of Steel is not cumulative with itself on the same troops, but it does last the whole battle, as do all other troop buffs that don't have an explicit ending condition (e.g. Mistform has a 1% chance of wearing off per hit, BEs end when the caster dies).

I think max covered everything but here you go anyway:

Mages target who ever they want. BTW Leigions of steel and the like effect multiple units at once ( they have a large Area of effect).

These spells do not wear off until the end of battle no matter how many diffrent units are targeted.

Sermon of courage effects a small number of troops , fanaticism effects the whole battlefield.

Does WHERE the Priest is on the battlefield matter when casting Sermon of Courage.

I mean more specificaly do I need to have them close to troops I want covered or can I have 5 priests cast from the back and get everyone covered?

The manual specifies the spell's range.

If you have 5 priests cast, they will try to spread out so they don't cover the same guys. I.e. casting Sermon of Courage twice on the same guys does nothing, so the 2nd and subsequent casters will try to target someone new. As Taqwus says, they may or may not have the range (or Precision) to hit everybody you'd like them so. Check the manual or the in-game description.

Edit: while we're on the topic of buffs, I'll add that mages like to target big, tough things. A mage next to an elephant or an Umbral, scripted to cast Iron Warriors or Body Ethereal, will usually cast it on the elephant or Umbral instead of himself. That's a good thing.
