Thank you to Mephisto for providing me with an AI template to follow (used the Centauri as a guidline for certain things).

Let me know if you encounter any problems. The Shadri are meant to be a 'friendly' race that is more interested in exploration and research than war, but they will fight if pushed. They also have a long memory for past wrongs committed against them.

This is my first try at a race set, the Slaanesh. Inspired by the great mods and races on this board and at USY and 1.49 compatable. I've used Doga L2 for generating the race set. The AI is complete and appears to run without bugs, but does not have much play time under its belt. Feedback will be much appreciated.

This is a quick-fix for Sergetti (from TDM Modpack) gold vesion 2.10. All you need to do is download this file and unzip it in your SE4 Gold folder (make sure that you have "Use folder names" selected if you are using WinZip).
The file contains only 1 file that will fix the error, so it is very small download.

Hampsterattii raceastyle. Just a fun one I did over the week-end. Uses a very slightly modified EEE AI from the TDM-mod pak. Very much a work-in-progress but I thought i would go ahead and throw this one out for grins. Compatible only with SEIV Gold.

My thanks to Ms. Kitty from the CM:BO forums for permission to use the hampster pics Last year.

The ships are all original though the Phong did provide a rough template for some of the ships.

I make no warranty that this set will work for you but I hope it does.

I just heard a rumor from a friend who knows a friend.
Essentially the AI gold and 1.49 files have an error in them. And when folks have Mods based on the AI 1.49 files they sent the error along. My friend found these errors and corrected them. As soon as I can I am going to confirm this and see if Malfador will check this problem out.
If any knows about this stop me.

hey everybody,

I have about three shipsets I cannot use because the game tells me it cannot load the portrait *.bmp file when i try and scroll to it in the race setup section of the game. I looked at the files and they look ok and load in windows like all the rest of the ones that work. Has anyone else had this problem and do you know how to fix it?

I have finally finished (sorta) the Orion Faction Race Style-Gold Version. What I do is zip to a the pictures/races folder, then copy paste the .emp to the empires folder and orionfaction.txt to the designames folder. See the read-me for credits (thanks Mephisto!).

Another race-style (Last one for awhile!). This time those bad-azz crabs the Brachyura. Same instructions as the Orion Faction (see below). Thanks for the observation pathfinder. However, I'm not trying to load the empire as a saved empire file, all I'm trying to do is use the race files to CREATE an empire file. I cannot do it because when I try and scroll to the race portrait file i get the "cannot load *.bmp" file.

Zaconis: I have run into that too. Trying to remember...seems to me there was an error in either the race pic or "main" pic is missing from that race folder in the SEIV/pictures folder or a spelling error somewhere in one of the AI files so that the race can't load properly. Wish I could help more.

Just an FYI: Any Questions please post in main section, this is just for uploads.(not a flame)

Now to your problem. Check the race folder name and make sure it matches the name of the files inside (ex: if the race folder is Cardassian then all the files inside must be named Cardassian_*_*.txt or bmp etc, Card or other names will not suffice. The program is looking for 'X' name and is not finding it inside the folder. (If this is not the case, damned if I know) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

Sorry but due to some strangely low size limitation for the uploading files I had to break this into 4 files. You need all of them.

This is an rather extensive modification of SE IV gold Version 1.67. So be prepared that many things are different to the original or the TDM-Modpack.
It includes all my previously posted modifications namely CueCappa, Phong, Borg, Intel modification and new happiness files.

What were the aims of this modification:

1.) Improve the AI and make them more various with individual aspects.
2.) Give more balance to the different components, especially weapons, happiness types and the racial traits and characteristics.
3.) Increase the variety of the game.

How to install this modification:
1.) Unzip the first file (QMod) to the SE IV Gold folder.
2.) Unzip the second file (Pictures) into this QMod folder.
3.) Unzip the third file (Amazon) into the race folder of the QMod folder (not the original SE IV race folder!)
4.) Unzip the forth file (Borg) into the race folder of the QMod folder (not the original SE IV race folder!)
5.) Change the Path to the name of "QMod" or replace the orinal path.txt file by the Qmod path file (save the old path file!).
6.) Start a new game.
I am really sorry for this complicated procedure but the reasons are mentioned above and I can't change it.

Important: Because new racial traits are used, no empire files that were created outside of this modification can be used.
There is a detailed description how to make new empire files in the Shrapnel SE IV forum, but basically you let the computer create random empires, turn all empires to human control immediately at the beginning of the game and save the empires under an appropriate empire name.
For the standard races and the Borg/Amazon the empire files are include in this modification.

You may add as many other races as you want, but their AI files might not be too well adapted to my modifications. However they should work without errors.

Main features of the modification:

1.) Modified AI files for the standard races of SE IV and the Borg/Amazon.
Now this is a never ending work. There will still be much to improve in future Versions if my time allows it.
The AI is still not smart but has a little bit more muscles.
2.) New racial traits: assimilation, neutral, AI-Intel stealing and sabotage and Human Intel.
The Intel traits let you chose the intel projects of your AI. If no trait is selected then only defensive intel will be used by this race.
Human players should select all AI-Intel traits and the Human Intel trait.
On the contrary the assimilation and neutral traits give important benefits, that I would consider inappropiate for human players.
Only the Borg AI has the research and design files to make proper use of the assimilation trait
3.) New happiness types and files. Collective happiness type should be used only by AI empires.

The Borg race was created by Atrocities and the Amazons have their origins in the Dominion race of AJC. I thank both very much for the permission to use their pictures (and some of the speech files).
The speech file of the XiChung was created by Twin Galaxies.
Some of the designname files I use were posted once on the SE IV forum, but I just don't remember the autor: my apologies and see below!
To many people of the Shrapnel SE IV forum who provided ideas that I used in my modification: if anyone should feel he or she should be given personal credit, let me know and I will gladly include your name in the readme file.

Due to my limited time, the testing I made was not as extensive as I would have liked it. So if you want, you may call this a Beta Version.
Therefore I am very grateful, if you report any problems in the SE IV forum.

In this update I have focussed on the DesignCreation and Research files of my AI for Borg, Jraenar, Klingon, Praetorian, Romulan, Shadows and UkraTal. This Version incorporates a few changes from v1.61.

DesignCreation.txt:
I have reduced armor and point defense a little to increase weaponry slightly. I have adjusted the values slightly to ensure that Other Abilities are better prioritised.
I have also eliminated the use of High Energy Discharge Weapons, relying solely on a combination of PPB's and Null-Space Projectors.

Research.txt:
As I have flagged above, none of my AI now research High Energy Discharge Weapons. This has allowed me to promote Shield, Cloaking and Sensor tech's, which in my play tests has made the AI more prone to launching surprise Cloaked Ship attacks. The Research tree for all races has been extensively revised to prioritise those tech's that an AI really needs to be robust.

I have played five play-tests of the middle section of the game on large galaxy-low bonus-hard opponent settings and have found the AI fleets much tougher than before. The Borg in particular with their special components regularly feature in the top 3 AI. Hope you enjoy this revision.

Oough.. There is a bug/feature in Aquealian/Vorlon design_creation.txt file that makes Gas/Ice colony ships to fly with speed 2.

Hi all! I made a new AI for the original Fazrah race. The AI uses the weapons like the original Malfador release, (Torpedos, and Graviton Hellbores) but i added to use Shield Depleters as new weapon. All files new except the anger.txt, and politics.txt, so they are still like wars, but they a bit tougher now:)

In my play tests with 19 Modpack races, I usually find 3 of my AI in the top 6, so they are pretty good at expanding and snotting other AI. All feedback is welcome!

The various race files each need to be put into a race folder under the Pictures/Races/ subdirectory.
eg SpaceEmpiresIV_Gold/Pictures/Races/Shadows
(in the above example, stick all of your Shadows files into a new Shadows sub-directory.

Attached is a revised AI_General.txt file for the Shadows which fixes a typo affecting the random 2000 pt race selection.

Updated Jraenar, Klingons, Praetorian, Romulans, Shadows, UraTal and Borg Variant 1.78f.

Have been sick the Last two weeks so have had some time at home to do further work on my AI.

After receiving feedback on v1.78b/c, I have undertaken a major update of my AI - principally the ship designs (have tried to optimse weapons payload vs support gadgets and have disarmed the Colony ships (Lt Cruiser is their largest hull size).
I have also had a further tinker with the Research pathways of each of the races too in order to ensure that they get the most important tech's at the right time.

I have zipped the files up in a directory structure to assist those who havent gotten used to fiddling around with SE4 files. The zipped files just need to be transferred into your corresponding SE4 directories.

I have play tested each of the AI individually for 120 turns without any snags but havent played a multiplayer Version through yet (shouldnt be a problem as only the Research and DesignCreation files have been amended - and the Components file in the case of the Borg).

DesignCreation.txt:
I have changed the weapon selection slightly. Have switched the Jraenar, Klingons, Praetorian and Romulans back to secondary Null Space Projectors. Shadows and UkraTal retain engine overloading weapons as a secondary selection.

Colonisers have now been disarmed and restricted to Lt Cruiser hull size maximum.

Borg use shield depleting weapons only now on their Boarding Ships in an effort to increase their boarding attempts (using PPB's, you have to knock out the shield generators in order to facilitate boarding).

Research.txt:
The Research tree has undergone more work in the later stages of the game to prioritise those tech's that an AI really needs to be robust (eg: large spaceyards and stellar manipulation have been advanced whilst some less useful tech's have been pushed back).

Components.txt
The Borg now have a Shield Depleting Weapon which becomes available at the same time that they get boarding parties.

The only significant change is that Combat Sensors and ECM have been advanced further up the research tree.

Components.txt - as per 1.78f
The Borg now have a Shield Depleting Weapon which becomes available at the same time that they get boarding parties.

Strategies.txt
New file created to support Maximum Weapons Range combat strategy.

My latest fixes:

Version B5-VI-Path-C:

1: Re-did settings for "engines per move" for all ships (B5 standard) to prevent range check errors.

2: Re-did minimum/desired speeds in most ships, again to halt range check errors.

3: Changed to "resource generation - organics as ability for armor (leaky) and loaded armor into all ships/bases/wp as a misc ability.

4: Re-set maximum number engines for baseship and heavy baseship to 100 in order to prevent range check errors.

5: Took out misc. ability "solar generation" from scouts, colony ships, population transports, repair tugs to prevent 2 or more reactors from being designed into ships by the AI.

6: Changed defense base misc. ability from "solar generation" to "combat movement" to prevent reactors from being designed and to add "station keeping engines" to the designs.

7: Added scatter pulse and quad pulse weapons to Dilgar (based on same weapons used by Llort) in components.txt file.

8: Hopefully I didn't forget something I did, my notes are not the best.

There are 2 main changes:

New races Image replacement mod.

This mod replaces all 20 stock and 6 neutral races images. No ships are replaced, and no AI files. I may release a revision at some point with modified AI files just to change the bio descriptions so they match the pictures better. I tried to use ones that came close. And I tried usign ones that were consistant in quality and texture and whose coloring fit their shipset.

Put it all in a zip with the folder structure suitable for use as a mod.

In this update I have again focussed on the DesignCreation and Research files of my AI, but, have also done some tweaking on the AI_Construction_Vehicles file in order to further enhance expansion and benefits from Mine technology.

DesignCreation.txt:
I have increased the number of ship types so that weapons payload is optimised.

Research.txt:
The Research tree has been tweaked in the early stages of the game a little (Missile 3 deleted and Combat Sensors and ECM advanced a bit).

AI_Construction_Vehicles.txt:
Coloniser construction increased slightly and Mines and Minelayers advanced in the queues a bit to ensure their use.

TechArea.txt and Components.txt files:
The Borg require the included TechArea.txt and Components.txt files to be placed into your data directory, or alternately, for the Borg Technology entry (in the TechArea file) and the various Borg components (in the Components file) to be copied into your existing files.

Here are some four components pictures that I think will use in X-com mod! Feel free to use or modify them.

Also a question to whoever knows: Why when I use a component picture of the higher numbers (the ones I downloaded from the image pack for example) it shows in the component description or in the research window, but they don´t show in the small components images of the ship design window and neither in the ships components details "tactical combat" window. How can this be fixed? Help, please!!

There is an explanation of the lbx file format, which includes a header that describes how many files are inside, as well as what their offsets are. You can then read the bytes and split them apart according to the header, but you won't necessarily know whether you have text data, graphic data or whatever.

TESSELLATE BETA 2.0.

After a long time working with only 2 AIs, finally decided to start a new one.
Why a new AI?
Well, honestly I was very impresed with the AI that Rollo did for the United Flora, and believed that using some of their ideas, I could create a decent Cristallurgy + Religious race.

The shipset was done by Gryphin and have 2 vital strong points to me: it's very nice and looks very cristallyne!

This is a Beta 2 Version, with the AI files that I'm using in the AI Deth Match 2 Contest. Then, sorry if still the RPG was not included (need to wait an answer from Rollo!).

Please report me any suggestion or bug that you could find!!!

Ok here goes, first upload, here's my realese info:
This is the "Swarm", they are inspired by the bad guys in Wing Commander Prophecy and an episode of Voyager (I forget the exact title, it had a lot of little ships that "swarmed" Voyager, I thought it was cool). The ships are made up of several smaller vessels working in unison, the more little ships present the bigger the ship size, 1=escort, 2=frigate and so on. I have no AI yet, just the pictures. During testing all the ships looked like they were supposed to except the "Colony" and "Dreadnaught", I don't know why, they worked in the "style tester" available from Malfador.com but in game they are replaced by the "neutral" Dreadnaught and Colony ships. If you can figure out the problem please tell me in my thread:

This race is sort of an homage to the pulp SF magazines of the '30s and '40s. Not being an artist myself, I took all the images from pulp magazine cover scans [from mags like "Planet Stories," Startling Stories," and "Thrilling Wonder Stories"] which I found on the net and modified them to make them usable in SEIV. For this reason, the various ship graphics are less homogenous than those of other ship sets, but I still think there's a certain similarity in style due to them all belonging to a particular era in SF illustration. However, in the race description I did attempt to justify this graphic variation, by portraying the race as both rag-tag refugees from another galaxy and part of an extremely decentralized society. This seemed to fit the ideal of anarchic freedom which was so prevalent in pulp-era SF.

I based my AI files on the TDM Modpack files, with a lot of modifications to get the effects I wanted. My limited playtesting indicates that at least the 5k Version is competitive. I think it would work best in a large galaxy with not too many other empires, but, right now I'm testing it in a medium galaxy with eight other empires and 6 minors [TDM Modpack races], and the race is still hanging on after 350+ turns.

Anyone who is familiar with the SF of the pulp era will probably recognize where the names come from.

I started working on the "Speech" file, but there are so many lines, and I wasn't sure how I wanted to go with it, so I gave up after changing all occurences of "senates" or "councils" or "regents" or whatever to "Constituent Assembly," which is what I decided to call the Duke's council. If I have time, I'll do some more work on the speech file before we leave the country.

I also intended to make a design name file, but, again, I'm not sure how I want to handle it. I thought of using the names of all the pulp magazines I could find, but that would only amount to a few dozen, and many of them wouldn't be SF pulps, but, instead, magazines like "Railroad Stories," "Six-Gun Western," "Film Fun," and "Love Stories."
I may still do this, and throw in the name of some of the pulp SF authors and characters from some of the stories. If, and when, I do, I'll post it here. Maybe I can do some work on it tonight. At any rate, for now, I've set the "emp" files to use "ravager.txt.," which, actually, has some names that sound like the kind of names you might find for a spaceship un a pulp story.

Here's the complete, updated Version of the Pulp race. I slightly revised the speech file, and included the pulp.txt file of design names.

Thanks to everyone who has commented on the race. If anyone has any problems with it, let me know and I'll try to address them.

If I have time, I'll try to come up with a neo-standard Version.

Should have known I'd forget something. Here's a credits.txt file. Although it took quite a bit of work for me to make this race, that's just a fraction of the work of the artists whose pictures I used for the ship set. Plus, I used previously existing AI files as the starting points for mine. Now that the race has "gone public," this info should be included. I've upgraded the Pulp race/shipset to neo-standard [++, I think] and improved the AI. My unit is leaving for overseas duty in a few days, so this will probably be the Last update for while, altho I would like to do more with the AI. However, it's as good as I could get it, given the deadline I had to work with, and testing indicates that it compares favorably with other TDM AIs, altho the best ones, like United Flora and the Space Vikings consistently beat it. I hope everyone who downloads it enjoys it.

Ok I've rewritten almost completely the old AI of the Infernal Realm (that was copied by a stock AI). It works pretty good and is also a pretty cool shipset!

I wonder why no one took over to revive this great shipset for Gold, it's really well done.
I corrected a couple of bugs (they had 250 race points unspent) recreated the empire files for gold and added the usual drone technologies and research, so it's now prefectly 1.84 ready.

Addisian Empire 1.9
After my long absence from SE4 I realized that my first revision of the Addisian Empire was really flawed: no drone construction and the empire files were not rebuilt to respect Gold features.
Hopefully now all is fixed.

INTRODUCTION
=============
First - many thanks to the folks at Malfador Machinations ("MM") and Shrapnel Games for their continued support and communication with the gaming community. Since MM is dedicated to releasing a number of future patches, this "Mod" pack does not contain any modified tech trees, new components or facilities, just a major overhaul to the AI files to get the most of the current Version of SE4.


INSTALLING THE TDM-MODPACK
===========================
AUTO-INSTALLER - Just double-click on the file and follow the instructions.


UN-INSTALLING THE TDM-MODPACK (OPTION 1)
=========================================
(1) Copy the file "original Path.txt" from the TDM-ModPack folder to your Space Empires IV folder.

(2) Delete the file "Path.txt" in your Space Empire IV folder.

(3) Rename the file "Original Path.txt" now located in the Space Empire IV folder to "Path.txt".

(4) The game will now run with it's default settings. The "TDM-ModPack" folder is still present. You can either delete it now or keep it to reinstall the TDM-ModPack if you desire to do so. To re-install the ModPack, follow the instructions for un-install but use the "TDM-ModPack Path.txt" instead.


UN-INSTALLING THE TDM-MODPACK (OPTION 2)
=========================================
(1) Open the file "Path.txt" in your Space Empires IV folder.

(2) Alter this line:

Using Mod Directory := TDM-ModPack

to

Using Mod Directory := None

(3) Save and close the file "Path.txt".

(4) The game will now run with it's default settings. The "TDM-ModPack" folder is still present. You can either delete it now or keep it to reinstall the TDM-ModPack if you desire to do so. THE SE4 LAUNCHER UTILITY BY MATRYX
====================================
We are happy to be able to incorporate one of the best utilities created by a fellow player for those that use mods with this game. This utility was designed by Matryx and is included with his express permission. It allows you to choose a particular "mod" folder upon starting SE4. This utility will be automatically installed along with the TDM-ModPack and will be located in your main SE4 folder. For more detailed information be sure to read the file "SE4Launcher.doc" located in the main SE4 directory after installation. To use:

(1) Press your "Start" button on the windows task bar, select "Programs," then select "Shrapnel Games" and click on the program called "SE4 ModLauncher"
(2) When the utility starts, choose the mod in the left most column that you would like to use for this game by clicking once with the mouse (note- the utility automatically creates these choices based on the list of folders located in your main directory and is designed to give your information for each mod that contains a "modinfo.txt" file)
(3) Once your selection is made, click the button called "Play SEIV."
(4) That's it! If you selected the "TDM-ModPack" you should be greeted with our specially modified intro screen to let you know your selection was successful.


INSTALLING OTHER MODS
=======================
If you want to use other Mods while playing the TDM-ModPack, make sure to install all other MODs you download into the "TDM-ModPack" folder and do not edit or override the "Path.txt" in your Space Empires IV folder. Following these instructions makes sure you don't cripple your ModPack installation involuntarily. BEWARE: Overriding any files in the "TDM-ModPack" folder may disrupt your ModPack installation!

I've made kind of a sequel to the Pulp race [near the bottom of page 16 of this topic], called the P'ay P'ur-Baks. As played by the AI, they're a predominantly carrier race--altho, obviously, when controlled by a human, they can be played in any fashion. Here's their first publicly released version.

The Caspian Empire was founded in 2061 following the end of the Great Galactic War which left the galaxy in ruin and many colonize worlds isolated and presumably alone for all eternity. The deployment of the Armageddon Device forever changed the face of known space as it permanently ended faster than light travel within the Galaxy. The deployment of this doomsday weapon was the only way to permanently end the conflict that had brought about the collapse and the out right extinction of many great societies. Space travel was thought to be lost forever, but the wonders of the Universe chose otherwise. Slowly, almost methodically, a mysterious thread of pure energy ribbons began to grow between star systems. A virtual spider web network of interconnecting filaments began to establish themselves throughout the galaxy. These micro filaments grew into massive neutronic conduits for which man and machine could pass from system to system. These "warp points" become more and more stable as the years went buy. Finally, some 360 years following the end of the great war man was once again able to travel the stars.

From what we have been able to gather we know that the Shadow race is one of the First Ones. They are an incredibly old race who at one time were dedicated to peaceful exploration of space. But over the millennium they began to adopt the theories of chaos and began to wage an ugly repetitive 1,000 year war with other races in the galaxy. They believed that through chaos, change would come. That races would evolve, and become more. This philosophy of chaos led to war after war every 1,000 years or so. Eventually only the great cataclysmic brought chaos to the Shadows chaos campaign.
