I always thought the natural decrease was a tendancy to become unhappy over time. Isn't this what drives the planet to indifferent on turn 3 with no other events ?

It definitely used to work. And definitely does not now. I just ran a test to confirm what I am seeing in PBW games.
Stangly enough, if you give a fleet orders to pick up troops...

you know, I wonder if my problem is that my main fleet are all missile armed. They launch all their missiles in an attempt to wipe out the WP, but since there are 30-odd ships, they end up glassing...

yep, tried capture planet as the fleet strategy.
I dont seem to remember having any trouble with before Gold.
Looking at the combat replay the troop ships just run straight for the corners.

Has something changed? My transports with troops on board keep running away and the rest of my fleet glasses the planet. I never had to put weapons to troop tranports before. Do I need to do this now...

seems to me then that a PD ship should have something like a Napalm bomb in addition to the PD cannon, so that it is prevented from running away in cmbat, but has nothing that can target enemy ships....

I wonder if random might actually be better? As you say at least it's fair, and it might help break some of those warp point stalemates and make the early/middle game a little less defence-oriented?

I ran a simple test with 2 human-controlled empires in a regular game and it appeared to me that the defender (regardless of player order) was going first on warp point battles. I ran the same test...

think I'll just make a practice of asking the host of any game I'm in to say whether it's ok or not. The in-game comms can be almost impossible to do anything other than make basic treaties.
