Ah, GAME OPTIONS. Sigh. I could have sworn I checked that. While I was at it I turned off music and sound options. I suspect that the slowdowns had something to do with those being turned on but not...

Yeah, this is exactly what I see, but I already figured out that I should change it just as you did. Still got that "exe not in folder" message though. But it does install.

Ironically enough, I did re-download the file before the re-install. Made no difference. Got it from the link in the FAQ on this forum. Sigh.

I doubt it's any of that as SE4 is the only game with which I encounter this crashing problem. My comp seems to be in good shape.

Seems to happen on or about the third turn of combat and only in big battles (several dozen or hundreds of ships).

OK, just tried to use the map editor to make a map with four predetermined starting positions to test to see if everything is working correctly.

I did that and named the map. I started up a game...
