Re: Cromwell I frontal turret armour

This site states that the problems with the British 75mm were not cured until early 1944; in fact special firing trials were held as late as October 1944 and crews much preferred the US 75mm. One of...

Re: Minor German OOB error

Thanks. I did some checking. Photos of the Saukopf-mounted MG are easy enough to come by; those used in the composite mantlet less so; the one posted on the AAMG discussion is one of the few I've...

Re: Minor German OOB error

The MG on the StuG II Ausf. G fired throuh the mantlet, and I have photos of vehicles with these fitted into the Saukopfblende (sow's head mantlet). Off-hand I cannot remember whether the...

Re: US use of 57mm APDS

Agreed, but 2 pdr shatter problems were due to uncapped AP shot being used at German face-hardened armour in N Africa; the US 75mm M72 AP round had similar problems and later both the 2-pdr and US...

Re: Cromwell I frontal turret armour

Other sources include the later Armour in Profile on Cromwell and Comet, and David Fletcher and Richard Harley's Osprey New Vanguard # 104 on the Cromwell series. This, and an article appearing in...

Re: British 75mm MkV tank gun

I can't find annything that mentions face-hardened armour on halftracks.

As for PzKfw IVs, it seems to depend on sources.

My previous post about German tanks is from Lorrin Rexford Bird and...

Re: British 75mm MkV tank gun

I've done some checking, and what I said earlier about the cats is not quite right (see below). Face-hardened armour was used on the 4, 6 and 8-wheeled German armoured cars, i.e from SdKfz 221...

Re: British OOB / 25pdr AT gun

What in God's name is the 25 pdr doing with sabot ammunition anyway? It fired a plain steel AP shot designed for self-protection, and although an HEAT round was developed it nevere saw service. Each...

Re: 150 discarding sabot.

11,000+ APDS rounds sounds fired by US forces sounds like a lot of trading unofficially. I am sure it was supplied openly. The figures came from research that ASL guru Bob McNamara did at Aberdeen PG...

Re: British 75mm MkV tank gun

Churchill units often had a troop of 4 M10 76mm or Achilles 17-pdr SPs attached for this purpose. There was a drive to fit as many 75mm guns before D-Day to Churchill Mk IVs (only one Mk III went to...

Re: 150 discarding sabot.

The Germans only ever considered discarding sabot rounds to increase the range of artillery. None was used in action as far as I am aware. This was NOT APDS, which only Britain and the US 57mm AT...

Re: British 75mm MkV tank gun

I am Charles Markuss, one of the researchers for the ASL system. M72 AP was solid uncapped shot designed for use against homogeneous armour. By the time it was in service with the British in the M3...

Re: Cromwell I frontal turret armour

It was originally 76mm thick, but from Mk VII onwards this was raised to 102mm (4"), and some parts of the driver's plate (the flat bits) had applique added to make 4" too.

Re: Lloyd Carrier

Yes, usually a prime mover for the 6-pounder, though the Universal carrier could also be used. the Loyd was unarmoured though detachable armour plates could be fitted. According to the now dead Col...
