I have tried to find an answer for this doing some searches here but coudn't. I am sure it is simple but...

What does upgrading engines does? I have upgraded from Engines Level1 to 2, but I see no changes in structure points or movement.

Taking it to level 2 (or three) just makes it cheaper. One level after that, you'll get an engine that gives a bonus movement point. Then two more levels of cheaper, another faster engine, etc.

So then it makes no sense to retrofit the ships with level1 engines to level2/3 engines, as you will just lose money and not gain anything.

YOu loose some money overall, but if you keep that ship like that for a while the maintance savings add up.
