The research points shown at the top of the F8 Research screen are last turn's points.

To see your actual research points for this turn, you need to press F9 and look at Scores.

Scores don't take into account the research from trade though.

Or press F5 Colonies for both your current Research and Intelligence totals (but I don't think that page inlcudes trade, either).

Trade from each ally is on F9 Empires(?)/Trade.

I always have thought it was the points recieved last turn and to be spent this turn. i.e. your research goes into a bucket to be spent one turn later on projects you have defined.

I am not saying it worked that way, but that is how I thought it worked. I have had progects just barely schedualed for completion still complete dispite me scrapping some research labs.

The funky thing is that the total research points shown on F9 Scores is definitely last turn's points, but does include Trade...
