Sweeping mines

How do you sweep mines? I have two mine sweeping ships. I�m currently trying to sweep an enemy minefield for an ally's system (that I plan on conquering later on) and my ship�s cloaked. Do I need to have my ship uncloaked to sweep the enemy minefield? I press the broomstick icon to sweep the minefield but after the next turn, the minefield is still there.
