				 win2k KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
About an hour ago, I got a BSOD in Windows 2000 sp 4 with the following information:
Stop 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xA012609C, 0x00000000, 0x00000063)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
*** Address A012609C base at A0000000, DateStamp 4047dcd6 in win32k.sys

Googling "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" turns up a lot about viruses that I do not seem to have, due to not having any registry keys matching what I am supposed to be removing:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q294728/
And this telling me to install the latest service pack, which I have:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;811363
The computer performs a hard reboot randomly, sometimes after just a few minutes. I can not run a more complete virus scan due to this. Temperature and voltage readings seem to be within tolerable ranges.

I haven't changed any hardware or installed any new software recently. |

Time to call in for one of your two free techniqual support from Microsoft. I had something simular a long time ago. I had to call in a tech support to get the PC back up. They directed me in how to load one of the last good system back ups. Ultimately the Hard Drive was the problem. It simply was dying do to heat wear.
I would call the MS tech support. You should get two free tech support helps with your copy of Win2k.

Win2k = mucho bad. Get XP. Or, if you can't, I'd even settle to go back to 98 SE if I were you.
If you upgrade to XP, on the other hand, you would still get plenty of support, as Microsoft is still happily tinkering away at new service packs for XP, while the others are being left out in the deep freezer IIRC.

				 Re: win2k KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
That’s a kernel intrusion error. It can be a bad driver, a bad patch like the MS05-018, or you may have the worm. If you have made no changes and applied no patches, then look for a worm. We were not hit with the latest family, so I can’t offer any tips as to where to look for it.

 |  Windows 2000 != Windows Millennium Edition.

Since "going back" from Win2k would mean WinNT4, and not Win98SE, I'm guessing that you are talking about WinME and not WIn2k, Strat. Just so you know, Win2k is a fine OS. If one does not need those few specific improvements offered by WinXP Pro, there is no need for one to upgrade from Win2k.

My own opinion would be that you are having hard disk drive or memory issues. Hardware problems, that is.

That said, I readily recognize Thermo's authority in this sphere. |

Naw its not Win2k that is causing the problem, its Fyron and all that sticky stuff on the key boards. The PC just can't handle it any more. This is why we do not eat at our computers guys......

Win2k is basically NT and NT is not millennium! Millenium was a reboxed version of windows 98 with some elements of Win2k but that is as far as it went.

In my experience, this has been the polar opposite from reality. Strategia_In_Ultima said: If you upgrade to XP, on the other hand, you would still get plenty of support, as Microsoft is still happily tinkering away at new service packs for XP, while the others are being left out in the deep freezer IIRC.

To me, the very few (non-bloat) things added in XP over win2k are not worth the cost of money to power the bits sustaining them. I can get far better free 3rd party applications to replace them.

Do you have a name of such a worm I should be looking for?

Speak for yourself man!

WinME also eliminated the last vestiges of legacy 16 bit architecture from the kernel, without bothering to prevent the installation of 16 bit drivers and 3rd party apps. This is the main source of problems in WinME, really...

=0=

Well, a hardware reboot occured somewhere in the 90% range while running memtest86, so I have removed the second stick of ram in hopes of it being the problem. |

 | Every day or so there is a new flavor of Zotob, and lots of old worms are showing up with altered code.

You can try booting up with a bartPC disk and then running one of the AV's against the hard drive.

Do not seem to be infected by Zotob or variants.
Is there a program that can be run to check the integrity of various pieces of hardware?
