Scrapping or upgrading of WPF's

I did a search on this question and didnt see anything but is there a way to scrap or upgrade weapon platforms? Many a time I build wpf's with early tech but with limited cargo space as the game progress's room quickly runs out.

The only way I can think of doing it is to send a transport to that planet, load the platform and then have the transport jetison it. This is highly annoying though especially if a shipyard planet is not close by.
