				 Re: GD MSN screwed me!
ehh, I am interested can you explain the whole situation,
is it you have msn messenger and and you loged off and it messed up your internet?

I personally have never had problems with msn, but I am always interested in storys as I run a technical help desk and I like to know possible problems...

Oh man, never use the original client.ICQ, MSN, AIM, they are all putrid cesspools of evil code.

Gaim and miranda are no-frills clients, but they won't screw you over.

Trillian used to be king of the hill, but they started making a new version from scratch, and its just not the same.

Actually i used ICQ for like 3-4 years. Soon after a few of my friends used other clients, so i was forced to switch to a multi-tool, so i got Trillian and i like it a lot, SJ. IRC, ICQ, MSN, whatever you want, its all in there and only needs really few memory |

You must not have 3.x then. Trillian 2.x and lower are fine pieces of software engineering. 3.0 and above are bloated crap that have huge memory and CPU requirements... It is fact that Trillian has become as much of a cesspool as the official clients. No way should an IM client ever use 28% of a 2 GHz CPU when viewing the contact list! Even disabling avatars and such only got it down to the 14-20% range. Gaim, Miranda, etc. rarely even hit 1%. And that Wikipedia link module... ugh. The IRC module is now the worst it has ever been, since they added one in the first place! The configuration interface is now a lot harder to use due to the excessive bloat. You can't even connect to Jabber, an entirely open source IM network, without purchasing pro! Rewriting the program from scratch has in this case meant that it is turned to feces. Combine this with an extrmely slow development cycle... ugh again.

Much like what happened with WinAmp 3... 3 is a bad version number! Thank god for foobar2000... |

 | SJ, I'm running Windows HP Home Edition here. For me those programs are like a drop in the putrid ocean. |

 Hehe
Looking up the changelog, it sounds like trillian 3.1 is doing better.
There is an insane amount of inane stuff in there, though.

So, I'd say:
 - If you want all the non-messaging fluff with video and bouncing icons and smilies of the individual clients, trillian 3 is the one to try. It may be bloated, but at least it is not evil yet.

 - If you want to just freakin' chat, then go with miranda or gaim.

Trillian 2 was a great middle ground. Looked nice, but wasn't overly fancy, and got the job done without a lot of useless whiz-bang crap.

PS:
I have a copy of both trillian 2 and winamp 2 in my "free net install files" folder. Both copies of that happen to be sitting on my two recently-dead harddrives, but I'm sure its also on a CD or three around here somewhere.

Not in the slightest, unfortunately. They added one or two IRC commands, but thats about all that improved...
It may be bloated, but at least it is not evil yet.
I disagree. I liked Trillian so much that I bought Pro. Then it took 11 months for the next update, 3.0. Then my 1 year subscription expired just before 3.1 came out... Trillian 2 was a great middle ground. Looked nice, but wasn't overly fancy, and got the job done without a lot of useless whiz-bang crap.
Alas, it will be dead the next time diabolical AOL or Yahoo change their connection protocols to try to kill 3rd party clients, again. This is why people should start using Jabber... |

 | Not messinger, the service... Qwest MSN. Logged onto MSN service to look at weather report. When I logged off it "lost synic" and thats all she wrote. Shut down my network card and took hours to get corrected.

 Portal sites are evil too.
Why not just check the theweathernetwork.com site, or some local newsie page?
