Gunboat diplomacy

In a survey taken some time back - it seems that everybody's fave ship size was Light Cruiser.

But what about Frigates and Destroyers? Before the advent of Multiplexers - is it better to make a bunch of FG's or DD's with fewer missiles/guns per ship or ... ?

Actually, you've got it backwards. Typically a LC will have fewer guns per ship then a DD and about the same number as a FG because the mounts make the guns bigger as well as doing more damage.

Unfortunately, in unmodded SE bigger is (almost) always better. In some mods, for example Proportions, your approach might work quite well.
