				 Range Check Error
 Hi, guys.
I installed SE IV Gold yesterday and I keep getting game killing (it hangs) error Messages. "Range Check Error"

 Any thoughts?

I'm running a Win ME system at present which has been giving me no end of trouble, so I'm thinking it might be an OS conflict.

				 Re: Range Check Error
RCE's can be caused by many differant things. I would recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the game. Then add your extra's one at a time. Most RCE's were caused by Computer Controlled AI trying to do something really dumb like refit a ship that could not be refit.
Do a search for RCE's Or Range Check Errors and see what you find. Best of luck.

Is there any apparent pattern to when the RCE's occur? |

I just got a RCE after 250 turns (Arrggg) of playing. Any ideas on trying to save my game in progress ?

Replay the turn but avoid any combat that usally got me past the errors.

 Next to try is:
 1) find out which AI player is causing the RCE
 2) change this player to human control, and end turn for it.
 3) if step two fails, try again, but turn off one more minister.
 4) once you have isolated the problem, you can turn that minister off for a turn, and tehn restore full AI for the next turn, and continue your game.
 5) if you can't get through the problem, post your savegame to the forum, and we will look into it.

				 Re: Range Check Error
 Hey guys.
My Range Check Error was actually taking place during my turn. I'd try to select a ship for orders and I'd get the error. This happened in every game I attempted after the first.

So I installed on a Win 98 system instead and the problem never arose.

I hate WinME. I haven't had a single game run properly on that thing (having tried such titles as SE4, Ultima 9, Shogun Total War, and Wizardry 8).

				 Re: Range Check Error
 Sylvius,
I don't think the problem is ME, or at least not entirely. I've got an ME Dell desktop that runs SE IV (v. 1.49, haven't tried Gold yet) and Wizardry 8 flawlessly. I've also got a Dell laptop (also with ME) that issues RCE's on SE IV in exactly the manner you describe (select a ship, and goodnight). Several others in this forum have reported similar problems.

As near as we can figure, there's a program running in background on newer Dell machines that causes this crash. The work-around seems to be to wait about 30 minutes after boot-up to start SE IV. Then it seems to work, although I don't think anybody knows why. You didn't say whether your ME machine was a Dell, but even if it isn't the work-around may be worth a try. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem with my DELL 8100
Desktop, delivered in September 2001.

I also have a similar problem with COMBAT MISSION,
where the "fast forward" button does not work,
but it also seems to go away in 1 hour too... |
