minor quibble with helos

Is there a way to prevent your helicopters from forgetting that you've set their range to 1? It appears that the little rascals don't always remember and waste all their ammo at longer ranges. It mainly seems to happen when I re-enter a saved game but everynow and then it happens in mid game. I suspect that I can disable their weapons till I need them but I thought I'd ask in case it is something that might need a future tweak.
