For what it's worth, we had controlled atomic chain reactions long before we had uncontrolled ones. The reactor built under the stadium n Chicago was part of the initial phases of the Manhatten Project.

On the other hand, we've had the exact opposite situation with fusion for some time now.

Re: Another kind of tech grid
True. There should be some variation between techs anyways. Perhaps a second and third (or more) tech areas such as "XYZ weapon applications" and "XYZ peaceful/civilian/productive applications" ?

Sounds cool. but wouldn't that also require a but-load of picture files? Being able to make so many different weapon mixes would require a seperate bitmap. Lot of work there to do that. in my noob opinion.

I don't see why. The DUCs in game all use the same picture, and have a wide variety of damage and range. Same thing here.

But with this idea, you would have stream, pulse, and projectile weapons, all cross mixed. i would think to do it right it would require a lot more pics. Not that it is not possible, or that the game wouldn't be able to handle it, but being able to tell at a glance the different varations. Maybe the same pic with a color change (blue, red or green DUC barrels; ect..)
And not to bring up an old subject, but I have a hard time distingushing the APB and the Meson bLaster color differences. When I say "red" I mean a lighter/brighter shade, not one so dark. (if thats what the Meson is using. lol). You get the point. I hope.

Re: Another kind of tech grid
IIRC, the MB is purple, and the APB is, well, purple. Maybe more of a magenta. I have trouble distinguishing them at a glance, and I'm not colorblind.

now see, I see ABP as a dark blue, and the meson as more of a dark plum......
Hey, new weapon idea. one that throws fruit at the fighter's windows, so they can 't see where they are going, and causes a snafu effect.

Re: Another kind of tech grid
Time to break out the nethack cream pie. Maybe gloved ships wielding cockatrices should be included, too--just don't fall down a pit!
