Mines are a good way to do that. IIRC, they don't blame you for their ships running into your mines, and will eventually calm down over the whole war thing.
BTW: You didn't declare war on them, did you?
If they declared on you, then they may reconsider in a reasonable time. If you declared war, they won't trust you for about 50 years.

They declared it on me. I have tried gifts and tributes (I need to read what the diff is there) as well as propose non-agression. I guess they just are not ready for peace yet. Just makes a problem for me as I have two fronts resulting from two seperate wars going on.

The one thing that must be fixed for SE V is the GD diplomacy and Political engine for the game. I hate to say it, but the current way diplomacy and political operations are handled by the AI is weak.
