Modders-continue mods in light of impending patch?
For all the Modders out there...
Are you continuing changes even though there's an impending patch? Won't that mess up any of the mods you've already created once the patch is released and possibly overwrites your txt files?

Yes, I statred changing stuff about an hour after I installed the game Last November. I stopped for a bit about 2 weeks ago, but what the heck. I couldn't control myself! I had to change some more stuff.

I have refrained from posting much however because of the impending update.

When it comes out I will do a virgin install from the cd to a different directory and then update with the new patch. I will then play that a bit until I find out what I don't like and then re-edit my old stuff back in where I want.

Since I am pretty happy with what I have right now I expect I will have some bit of work to get it back to exactly how I like it.( I've changed every hull, engine and weapon, most of the sounds, a lot of the pictures, and many many components. )

A lot is probably just cut and paste work however so it may not be too bad.

Besides that is what's so great about this game!

Regardless of what anyone else thinks is 'fair' or 'cool' or 'correct' if you don't like something, you can change it! Well, a lot anyway.

What me worry!
Keep well'er jp.

Re: Modders-continue mods in light of impending patch?
Well, I, for one, am waiting around on doing the actual file modding until I see what all exactly the next patch brings. However, I am typing up what I want to do. For example, I have an excel spreadsheet with exactly what ship classes there are, complete with all the information on the ships, costs to build, engines per move, etc... so that when the next patch does come out I can get to work right away. If you've looked at my Last mod (Davesmods11.zip), you'll know that it was exyensive. This one will be more so, but I plan to try and keep the play balance. In addition, I am studying the AI files so that I can work on modding those, also.
So, yes, I am waiting, but not really.

I'm quite happy to keep modding - working on the basis that the more practice I get, the better I'll be once the patch comes out.
Also, there is so much stuff buried in the data files which you can only really discover when you are modding.

 Tampa_Gamer:
Is my mod still going to be included in the upcoming Version of the modpack? Let me know, I've made a few changes, because of good feedback from people. But I will have to wait to see if MM makes any changes to those files. I hope so, one less thing to mod = the more time to mod something else. |

Re: Modders-continue mods in light of impending patch?
I'm restraining myself from making any new mods until the patch comes out. Sometimes forcibly. I even limit my playtime so my fingers won't start to itch about mods I want to make. Basically I just play pbem at the moment to keep my daily fix of SE4 from keeping me going totally insane.
Besides, real life is keeping me quite busy as it is anyway.

Re: Modders-continue mods in light of impending patch?
I'm in the same boat as Tenryu, and I just can't stop modding! I've even added a 1500 point Stealthy Race Trait with new weapon types, facilities, and armor types. I've been adding my own original component pictures to the "main" component picture (you just move down the picture to the next 36x36 "runway" and start with comp. number 289.) This game is so easy to modify that if you can cut and paste, you can do wonders. I haven't posted my Stealthy Race Trait in the mod section yet because..
 A. I'm still working on new weapons,
facilities, and all the new pictures
 to go with them.
 B. I have a good feeling the new patches
will rip me a new one because I've
 altered sooo many files.
 C. I have no more excuses.

The modding must go on even in the face of impending doooooom! (the patch ='s doom of course...)

Re: Modders-continue mods in light of impending patch?
jpinard - to answer your question, yes as to AI mods. Since the patch won't be out until towards the end of the month, we plan to put out an updated AI Mod Pack towards the middle of next week which will contain a number of improvements over 1.00/1.01. All of us have been updating our mods based on all the recent discoveries in these forum threads (i.e. construction queues, designs, etc.). As to tweaking the \Data files, yes and no. No in an official "mod pack" sense (unless we can all agree that we want to change the colony modules to have 1000 supply as an additional ability to avoid the AI's current problems). Yes, on a personal level b/c we all have "personal" mods that have tweaked \Data files. We all have "clean" installs that we use to test/edit our AI files for the AI Mod Pack.
Tenryu - great sound pack! I sent you an e-mail at cyberwar, please e-mail me at ctraber@ngn-tampa.com if you do not get it. Thanks
