Xaren is correct, it can't prevent a HD from going bad, but it saves you a lot of heartache when/if it ever does. I keep a spare "cloned" HD in my computer now so if my original one dies all I have to do is swap a cable and I'm right back in business. Pretty handy, especially for folks like me who tend to have rotten luck with HD's.
And in the long run, investing in a backup HD to store your ghost image is a lot cheaper than doing multi-volume CDR backups.
