I always have my ships break formation. I'm not sure if there really is an advantage in keeping your ships in formation?

Your ships don't follow the leader in formation, which really wastes movement and can stick them in bad positions.

You mean that they do follow the leader in formation, do you not?
Breaking formation is always the best option cause the ships will then revert to their individual ship class strat. instead of the fleet strat.

Mac, It is not just one button, but a group of buttons in the individual strategy menus.
There are buttons for types: transports, carrier, fighters, unarmed, etc...
