Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Played it, never finished more than one campaign, still sits in my closet (for space strategy game research purposes) - but I completely agree with Yef on his +/- list. I too liked the implementation of "spy rings". I also liked the sensor/detection bubble concepts and the fact that you needed X population to run & factories/buildings. What turned me off in the end was the cheating AI and the lack of any real tactics other than having superior tech/numbers.

I dusted that off Last week.
Just bought a racing setup - Steering Wheel and Pedals.
I just love crashing into things.

IMHO MOO2 was the very best single player strategy game ever. I still play it when I visit my parents (they have sufficiently old computer which still runs MOO2 with Win95 ). SEIV has the best multiplayer, but MOO2 is best single player strategy game.
The catch is to make a race which is not all too powerful. Interesting is to use original races and play Impossible. Then it is really hard to win. Or to give your race all research penalties and spy everything

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
what i liked to do in Moo2 is to create a game where i play against custum races that have the maximum research penality, so the game Lasted longer (yes, you can play against custom races, just create a lan game, save in the first turn, and load it as a single player game).
How you can't play Moo2 in WinXP? I have WINXP and MOO2 still works in it....

I have never tried it on XP. It was very unstable with W2k. That's a good trick to know, how to create custom races. I think I will use it.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Well I have been playing IG2 and I have some things to add.
1. I love the tutorial of the game. Very well done if not limited. It provides a very good working understanding of the game but lacks depth. Still very good though.
2. After about four hours of play I have to agree the game is very borning when compared to SEIV. It is simply to shallow in the game play department.
3. I like how some of the features of the game work, intel seems to work well, IE you hire, train, and deploy spies on missions. They can be turned and if you suspect such you can kill them.
I like ease of use of the menu system of the game. Although compared to SEIV it is a simplistic.
I hate to say it, IG2 even though it is over four years old, is still a better game than Masters of Orion 3. And we all know that SEIV is far better than that.
IG2 had some nice Bink - avi graphics and such that I would hope Aaron can incorp into SEV. I like the idea of planets and stars rotating as they do in other 4 X games, and I like how IG2 used rotating facilities and ship components. Very slick.
Combat was ok, a bit like rebellion, which took up a lot of processor time in the day.
All in all IG2 is a nice beginner 4x game but is is far to limiting for hard core players. It is however a fun game.
