The idea of renaming systems is good ie if you fully control a system you can change its name but say vs AI player if you lose control they can put the name back to the default - some potentail there

Individual cities - beyond the scope of a space 4x game i think - to offtrack - unless it was for a much more detailed troop planet invasion system then maybe

In terms of planet exploration i think the current system exploration or a fog of war is and will be sufficent - alien tech etc gets tied in there to.

Those are interesting suggestions, but for the average player, would only be a massive increase in the micromanagement of the game (which most people don't really want to go any higher than it already is!).
