Getting Empires to Stop Warring on Me?

Does anyone have any advice to get a race to stop attacking me? I didn't attack them first, they did.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Fight for stalemates, don't win, don't lose. Cripple their ships but don't actually kill them. Every turn the AI likes you a little bit more so eventually they'll offer you peace.

My strategy is basically the same. Well... except for the "stalemate" and "don't win" parts.

Anyways, if you have any ships parked in his (its?) systems, move them out. However, if you think he has claimed a little bit too much of space (including some of your colonies) then it is time to kick his sorry butt.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to make them like you so when given enemies make enemy suschi!

What kinds of things make YOU happy? Gifts!!! Give the AI a few gifts, my favorite are those "extra" resources I'm sure you're generating every turn. The AI's also seem to like comm channels; I've tried giving them interesting (but not combat-oriented) techs and star charts for places I haven't bothered to colonize yet.

It doesn't always work, but it should help. And sometimes you just have to glass their planets until they're willing to surrender.

Don't forget that you can force them into peace by having a higher score than them. Build more ships, colonize and destroy some of their ships and colonies.

A good way to pump up that score is by building bases. A few space-yard bases will not only allow you to increase your navy at a much faster rate but will also give you a nice lift to your score.
