In retrospect, I should have included a garnet/onyx question, to filter out those who have not played enough see the more common amazons.

I think the reason many may report seeing them is:

1. They remember finding them in Dominions I.

2. They have seen the mercenaries.

3. The amazons come preplaced on certain maps.

I haven't, in any SP or MP game. Neither has Norfleet.

In comparison, I've found Jade amazons countless times, and Onyx really quite often. Garnet only a few times, though.

I've got to wonder whether the algorithm for placement of indies is bugged, or is it just really almost impossible for crystal amazons to show?

They certainly look sweet, w/ air and astral paths. Do they have a sacred troop as well?

All amazon indies have some sort of sacred rider. I think the crystal ones have an archer on a pegasus, garnet have gryphons which fight after the rider dies, jade have a lizard with high damage bite, and onyx gets fear causing nightmares.
