In solo I would just wait until turn 25 or so and open up the ( much maligned ) ether gates a couple of times.
However that is a long time to wait in a multiplayer game. Death and Blood both get instant gratification in terms of a multitude of summons.
Maybe the "problem" ( such that it is ) is not with astral, but rather with the power of death and blood summons compared to the power of the other paths? I don't know if I want to go down that path, honestly!

saving up for dispels is also good.
Acashic records are simple and to the point -no futzing around w/ dozens of mages casting 8 different spells all over the damn place.
Yeap, Archae said it nicely.
Also luck swords can be quite usefull for some specilized designs.
If you are having a lot of astral gems you may also be interested in forging a ring of sorcery and/or ring of wizardy. It's quite expensive even with dwarwen hammers/site bonuses, but sometimes it can be much better than empowering your mages to reach some specific summons/Global enchantements/forging that you really need.
