Probably an Urban Legend candidate.

I recall this happening as a teen (which was a long time ago of course hehe).

The then car was a white corvette convertible and about the same price and about the same reason (ex or soon to be ex was being punished).
I believe the reason was woman was told from a distance, sell the car and send the cash, so she did.

Possibly...on the other hand, could be true. I once had a friend who came home from work one day to find his live-in girlfriend had sold everything he owned (except his car and the clothes he was wearing) for $100. Of course, there's much more to the story than that
