You can always trade them away.

Otherwise, I'd go for earth boots and Dwarven Hammers. You can forge some other nice astral/earth and fire/earth gear, too.

If you want to get out of the water soon, you could save those earth gems up, research one more level to Const 5, and spam some clockwork horrors. Earth boots will only be good for trades, because your starspawn don't have feet. Unless you're lucky, you'll also need to spend 30 gems to empower an E1 starspawn to E2 to be able to summon them. But who knows, you could even get lucky and recruit an E3 starspawn, and then you could make crushers too.

If you're dead set on forging, of course build a hammer. You can probably make some nice items with your starspawn like Crystal Coins and Matrix items. Girdles of Might are not bad for SCs with no feet. You can probably do some trades with those items, hammers, and Earth boots too.
