thejeff is right. That's the point of normal communions, the slaves boost the masters.
Slaves are only boosted by masters if the master casts a path-boosting buff:
Power of the Spheres
Summon Earthpower
Phoenix Power
etc.

Yes, I can confirm this. The point of a reverse communion is to boost a whole lot of slaves by 2 levels - one for ie. phoenix power and one for power of the spheres. In the case of the reverse communion the slaves get no bonus directly from the communion, but a +2 bonus is enough to get a level one mage up to the mainline evocation spells which require level three mages - falling fires, blade wind, thunderstrike, etc.
