ECM III + Stealth Armor III + Scattering Armor III + a few turns at a ship training facility = a ship that's pretty darn hard to hit. Will compensate nicely for racial defensive penalties.
If your opponent has high attack bonuses and or Combat Sensors III, you are going to take some shots though. Hopefully the former owner used all the points he saved in attack and defense and boosted production, construction, and or maintenance. Because you are going to need big fleets and be able to build them quickly.
