Basically, throwing something at them that they aren't scripted for. Earth Attack, Seeking Arrow, Fires from Afar (Flames from the sky), or even a few Send Horrors or Armies of the Dead (it depends on what they're scripted to fight against, undead can be an unpleasant surprise if they're hoping to fatigue-out their opponents, Horrors are a good surprise if they're scripted to fight armies more than SCs). Basically, the best way I've found to kill them is with a battle of attrition. Make them lose the mages without losing too much yourself.
