Thanks for these - I love that someone's tackling "Red Dawn" for scenarios. I've started working on a bunch myself, set in Northern California, but it's going to be a while before I'm done.

My one qualm with "Goodland" is that it's entirely unlikely that American police in the early 80s would have FN FALs. At best, some SWAT units would have M-16s, but rural sherrif's departments wouldn't even have those. Shotguns and bolt-action civilian rifles, at most.

Armor Clash near Corpus Christi, "Red Dawn" Series.

While being tasked to advance and engage any soviet units approaching the Southwestern approaches of Corpus Christi trying to flank the US 1st Cavalry Division main defense line, M1 Abrams tanks from the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment engage reconnaissance units and an armor batallion trying to slide through the sector.

The Alamo Guards debut, "Red Dawn" series.

After selective nuke strikes and infiltrators successfully destroyed and caused heavy damage to SAC bases and other military installations on Western USA, the US Army lacks sufficient air support for delaying the leading Army group of the Central American Peoples Alliance (CAPA) formed by both Cuba and Nicaraguan armed forces which is tasked by the Soviet High Command to push for the Houston area with the intention of "distract and confuse" US intelligence, nevertheless casualties on both sides are high. While the US army attempts to maintain the lines of defense in Western USA, The Texas National Guard has been mobilized out of the highly densed urban areas to ambush positions in hinterlands and key crossroad positions right between the suspected paths of thrusts across Texas. In this battle Elements from the Cuban 24th Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division make a dawn assault on the western outskirts of the City of Victoria defended by a battallion of The Texas National Guard's 1st Regiment "The Alamo Guards".

You should take a page from Shattered Union and have a bunch of partisans riding around in armour-plated low-rider pickups. I'd look forward to something set in Northern California; fighting over those mountain passes and the valleys beyond would be very interesting.

Do you mean the two scouts in the militia company? I don't think those were supposed to be Sheriff's deputies, I think they were just armed civilians who had volunteered to defend their town, and the National Guard was desperate enough to put them to use.

The scouts would have been among the better volunteers (vets still in good health, professional hunters, biathlon/sport shooters and the like), and FN-FALs or AWB-friendly knockoffs were and remain quite common among the more... enthusiastic gun owners of America.

Issued weapons: for the most part yes. But add lever-actions to the civilian rifles.

Available weapons: it's Kansas. Military pattern-weapons weren't exactly hard to find there, even in the 80's. Instead of M16's you might have AR15's or Mini-14's that have been converted to automatic fire, but functionally there wouldn't be that much difference.

There are a few hidden slopes on the map but great really like it. Going to try a few more of these & revisit this with Pattons replacing the Abrams & an extra 10 turns. Ended up just charging at the the end under smoke cover. Ended on turn 14, lost another couple of men to artillery for a total of 24 dead & had a plane shot down. 391 to 16792 final score

Imp - thanks for the play-by-play. My hat is off to you! Playing a very cautious game, it is hard for me to get that lopsided a victory for the U.S. I tend to get around a 14 or 15 to one ratio - with the score being typically 1100 to 16,500-17,000. My tank losses are almost ALWAYS due to Soviet aircraft - the SU's can do real harm to a sitting Abrams. Again, it sounds like you really know your stuff!

Interestingly its not so hard from the Ruskie side either though keep in mind I have an idea of what to expect. Its due to the AI not being able to take advantage of its strengths while you as a player can. Just fast advanced leaving tanks in key spots where they might possibly be able to fire at max range & turned their smoke dischargers off. I am safe from frontal hits but can destroy anything if I hit it. All Abrams & one M901 destroyed plus both attack helos as I stopped advancing once they turned up. 3 BMPs & 2 T-72 destroyed & one with no tracks.
Wont be a cake walk but minor victory should be do able

Thanks IMP! A really interesting take on the other side of the coin, so to speak. I did a variant on this scenario set in 1990 - with early Apaches, the next generation of M1-Abrams and some better jets on the U.S. side (one of the new-fangled F-117's that the Canadians let us fly from one of their airbases just across the border ) on the U.S. side. And some very nasty Soviet tanks as well - some T-72B's, a few upgraded T-80's, and some BMP-3's. The Soviets managed to bully their way all across the map to get up close and personal with the U.S. infantry. Ultimately, the Abrams ruled the battlefield, but it was actually something of a fight! Still, a decisive U.S. victory in the end.
