Regarding cbm there are some item tweaks some nation specific changes, as well as no gem generators and added late game summons. So I'd suggest you start a single player game just so that you can familiarise yourself with the changes to the nations you choose.

I will have to be considered a noob. I've never played in a multiplayer game before. I don't know what nation I will be, though. I think I'll pick once I know what sort of team I'm on.
