Saying Ermor is quite far behind in research is, I think, something that's a little hard to judge since MA Ermor works so differently from most nations. Unlike virtually everyone else, Ermor can turn mage-turns into troops without the hassle of researching conjuration spells and stepping up their gem income. Ermor has, near as I can tell, been aggressively hiring mages, it's just chosen to employ most of them in reanimating more troops and engaging in a very narrow scope of research (I've seen them throw around decent evocations). I've played against Ermor in MP several times now and they have always done well (ranging from quite competitive to OMG RUN!!) despite always being "behind in research".
However, yes they are undeniably at war with Agartha right now.
