Well, first off, the Gumbians natural enemies would have to be the blockheads. Unfortunately, they would resemble the Borg too much, and you would be sued by the Star Trek people, or atrocities.
Next, their ships would have to be made from toy materials, that look cool, but certainly have a hard time standing up to bLaster fire.
For their battle cry, you could use Eddie Murphy from Saturday Night Live shouting "I'm Gumby, damnit!", but I think that would get old pretty darn quick.
Best if the whole thing were avoided.

They were also made into cute but very dangerous toys. Made from some sort of rubber with wires in side so they would hold the shape they were bent to. Problem was these wires would eventualy poke through the rubber and start hurting the kids. I think it was one of the first toys to be taken off the market. That was the year Lawn Darts came and went
