I could have been more precise.

Since I read that the patch is incompatible with earlier saves, I moved my save-folder to a backup on my desktop and deleted it from where it usually lives. Then I installed the patch, which created a plain vanilla starter save-folder, which had no record of my having registered. Therefore, when I started, the game thought it was a new install and asked for the 19-digit key.

I created the problem myself by deleting the old save-folder, which wasn't necessary. Most users won't have this problem.

To fix this, since I had no access to my registration key without driving to my office, I just deleted the save-folder created by the patch and pasted in the earlier save-folder that I had backed up.

When I then started over, it gave me the options of New Game and also Continue. One doesn't need to continue the old game; at that point one can just start a ver. 1.1 New Game.

Sorry - possible bug in 1.1.0
Just loaded the patch and started a new game on "Medium". In both sectors 3 and 4, I completed a "Banker Delivery" quest. It said that I received some credits and a new piece of equipment (in one case a spacesuit and in the other a shield). However, there was no new equipment in my cargo space or equipped on my ship/team. I will continue on and see if this is true of all quests that say I get a new gadget.

Belay that, I tried it again and saw that the message I thought was giving me equipment was actually describing the delivery package - all I got was money. So -- no problem.
