Around 30 or so Light Cruisers armed with CapMissV, and a lot of patience, normally does the trick. A volley of 150 missiles can even hurt a Proportions Homeworld, given time, at least playing non-simultaneous vs the AI The hard part is keeping them supplied.
What I like is the way taking such a heavily fortified place typically turns into a siege!

Also, I'd be really interested to see someone try to take a Proportions homeworld from a *human* player=-)
Now that would be a whole lot harder!

*narf* That's a big big fleet for a proportions game. In my current simultaneous vsAI game I'm building a fleet of cap missile cruisers to take out the pesky AI who has shared a system with me from the start. I reckon I can probably support about 5 or 6 of those ships, and that's if I strip down my other fleets completely. Granted I have very little colony development and a small homeworld, but even so, 30 ships just for a bombardment fleet is huge.

I'm trying to switch as much of my defence as possible to units, but I'm still not sure how I'm going to beat him (short of glassing, which is unnacceptable.)

One tactic I'm considering is the "troop swarm". If I sent in dozens of troops-laden scouts with PD and ECM, some of them ought to make it down to the surface, surely.

I know I have won when I am able to destroy the enemy ships without the loss of one of mine.

Dunno how it works in simultaneous, but in 'normal' play each troop landing causes 10 rounds of ground combat. You're not going to get enough troops on a bunch of Scouts to avoid (extremely expensive) defeat in detail.

What you have to do is accept that you have to go into deficit spending, and 'get it done' before you go bankrupt. That's not going to be easy with a small homeworld, mind. You might have to spend some time building up your storage first. How long are you prepared to wait?

Of course, the other thing to remember is that if you take out all his other worlds, just blockading his homeworld will stop him building or maintaining other units - at least, it did when it happened to me! - so maintaining a blockade while you build up is important.

I think that limit (10 turns) may have been reduced for Proportions. Or is 10 the reduced figure? Onyway, the problem is the opposing infantry rather than the militia. If I can chip away at the troops bit by bit with high-tech troop units, I reckon I could probably take out the militia.

This is a true thing. Only problem is, I went bankrupt a few dozen turns ago (captured too many ships - D'oh!) and it will take me forever to build up my reserves again.

I guess I'll think of something. A siege is definitely part of strategy, as soon as I can knock out the fleets and stations.
