The combined air+foot formations really are pretty useless. Except for the AI purchasing the things.

The USA OOB may have a helicopter unit that it occasionally buys, but I am not going to dig around in the pick list data files. Try some games with lots of points - AI does not usually buy helo transported stuff unless it has a lot of points available to spend.

If choosing your own, just buy the air cavalry grunts and some transport helo formations. The AI happily loads up vacant transport helos its given with what it has to hand gruntwise.
