when a star explodes, is everything in that system destroyed?

You betcha. The shockwave destroys the star, other stars, all ships and units. The planets are turned into asteroids, if they had moons, multiple asteroid fields at the same spot. The system description remains the same as it was, however.
Now, you are listening to Phoenix-D right? The little text blurb associated with your star doesn't mean it's more likely to go nova, only if your scientists report it.
You're not fooling me, you're not worried about the star, you just wanna build a sphereworld 'cause it's a thing to have.

Busted! i just thought it would make a nice addition to my home system so i could show it off to some other races (*)
"oh, this little sphere world? huh, it's been here for ages"
*edited to not confuse people: it's races, not aces

Re: unstable star
Has anyone tried creating stars over a currently existing ring/sphereworld and building yet another massive planetary structure? It seems like a neat thing to do (and you'd have the weapon platforms of one ringworld protecting the other!). I would _think_ it would open yourself to someone making the new star nova before the world is built, but technically they can do that from the warp point anyway if they bring their own star creator.
